Nancy Engeman - Co-founder/Exec Dir of Come Rest Awhile (CRA) ~ Lake Oswego, Oregon

Nancy has dedicated her life to helping women in their recovery from substance abuse. “I have to keep doing what I’m doing because this very morning, somewhere, a woman woke up thinking her life is over. Nancy Engeman - Co-founder and Executive Director of Come Rest Awhile (CRA) ~ Lake Oswego, Oregon

Nancy has dedicated her life to helping women in their recovery from substance abuse.

As Co-founder and Executive Director of Come Rest Awhile (CRA), she is seeing a long time dream come to be.

CRA offers a safe and supportive home with a family atmosphere for women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. In the spring of 1997, an evening of melodrama and a spaghetti dinner provided seed money that paid for two computers and non-profit statues and so it began.

Nancy Engeman - Co-founder and Executive Director of Come Rest Awhile (CRA) ~ Lake Oswego, Oregon

Everything was donated to set up a comfortable home in Lake Grove and Nancy and six residents moved in on July 1, 2001.  Today CRA is located in a large, beautiful home in Lake Oswego and is home to 12 women. Since opening, over 150 women have come through the doors, approximately 45% of whom are clean and sober and continue to be a part of the family.

Nancy’s Passion

In 1997, I was introduced to Mickey O’Connell, also in recovery. A mutual acquaintance knew that Mickey wanted to open an upscale bed and breakfast for women in recovery, and that I always wanted a retreat house.

Research revealed that there were 8 sober living houses for men to 1 for women we realized the need for a strong, supportive home for women trying to rebuild their lives in early recovery and Come Rest Awhile was born.

We completed the 501©3 process and opened the doors on July 1, 2001. I moved in as volunteer Executive Director. Today I live close by and am on call 24 hours a day.

I could not have done this without the help and support of Mickey and the many angels in the recovering community who support Come Rest Awhile and me.

I have to keep doing what I’m doing because this very morning, somewhere, a woman woke up thinking her life is over. She doesn’t realize it yet, but she will never take a drink or drug again and her life is going to turn inside out. I know, because mine did.

Nancy’s Story

Near the end of 1975, I moved back to my hometown in central Illinois with my four youngest boys after a failed marriage.  I did not know where my two older boys were. I had lost everything, had no job and had no idea what to do. My alcoholism had reached a “bottom” and I knew I could not continue the path I was on. I sought help and entered recovery. As a result I have enjoyed continuous sobriety since December 24, 1975.

The recovering community stepped in with their support, and I was assisted with a place to live, furniture, linens, dishes, even food to start me and my four boys on a life I could not have imagined. Over the years, I worked in the nonprofit world, and in 1980, was hired as Executive Director of Sheltering Arms, a women’s halfway house in northern Illinois, and found my niche in helping women as I had been helped.

A reunion with both my older boys brought me to San Francisco in 1983, where I attended Antioch University, received a BA in Psychology and completed Masters’ work in Women’s Studies. I continued to work in the Alcohol and Drug treatment field in various positions, but my focus was always on women – and the need for support not always offered through traditional paths. Two women in recovery invited me to join them in Portland, OR in 1992 where I continued to work with women through the recovery program, sharing my experience, strength and hope.

I'm very proud of this lady. She has helped numerous people in sobriety. And she has helped me in more ways than you know. She's my Mom. I have seen her change so much over the years. We didn't have it easy when she first got sober. We didn't have much money, we lived in low income housing and still she went to work every day to make sure we had food on the table. She stayed sober through all of this! She truly is a miracle! I don't know if I would have gotten sober if she didn't get sober. But I'm grateful I did and I'm grateful she did. Love you Mom.

Nancy's dedication to helping women in recovery has helped countless women over the years. She has offered a safe, supportive, and loving home for women to work on putting their lives back together in a sober environment. My time spent there gave me the support to gain the self-esteem I needed to become a productive member of society again, and to move forward in my life in a positive way. I will always be grateful for Nancy's help in achieving that.

The world for recovering women is a much kinder place with Nancy in it.
Come Rest Awhile is an amazing model of extended sober care that has
helped so many women find sobriety and meaningful lives. I wish I had
been blessed with the opportunity to live in such a home in my early recovery.

When I was faced with the reality of having to leave an increasingly dangerous situation in my home, I had no place to go. Thanks to Nancy I was able to stay sober through the loss of a marriage to the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction. The library at Come Rest a While was very inspirational and helped build a strong foundation for further recovery and spiritual development.

I first met Nancy at Rockaway Beach, Oregon at a Women's Recovery Retreat in 1997. I was drawn to her right away. I asked her to speak In Lakewood, WA for our Anniversary celebration. She graciously accepted. She stayed with me & my family, giving me the privilege of getting to know her better. What a lovely woman. she has given her life humbly to the service of other recovering women. I will never forget Nancy.

Nancy heard at a meeting two years ago about a woman who was drinking herself to death. That woman was me. Nancy came to my home twice during my last drunk. She took me to OHSU where she insisted the Doctor call Hooper Detox and tell them to admit me next morning. She refused to leave until he agreed. I was admitted. I didn't know I would lose the compulsion and obsession to drink that day but I did. Gone, like it was never there. I threw what was my life up on the ceiling at Hooper. Four days later Nancy picked me up and drove me to a treatment center in Astoria OR. She had arranged all that.
My life the last two years is a gift to me and to my family. Nancy got a hold of me in the nick of time. I was dying. Today, I just LIVE LIVE LIVE all over the place!

Nancy is nothing short of a modern day Saint.
Her committment to helping others encompasses her life. From this, she
gives women the opportunity to change their own life one step at a time.
First by support. She will stand by your side and never give up hope. Hope is so easily lost and despair is so easily found in todays society. She gives Hope. She did this for me. Second by providing an enviroment to heal and grow. With the foundation provided by Come Rest Awhile, women are safe to find their way to a better life for themselves, and those who love them. These are Modern Day Miracles everyday, and Nancy fosters them. Her zest for life is wonderfully infectious, and any society should be honored to have her as a member.

She and Mickey turned a dream into a reality simply because they cared about giving other women the opportunity to make a change in their lives - just as they had been given. I don't know what many of the now sober, productive, happy and healthy women in this city would have done if it weren't for Nancy and Come Rest Awhile. The odds of people staying sober are quite low - a 45% recovery rate for CRA women is absolutely amazing. There are a lot of happy sons, daughters, husbands, fathers, mothers that are in debt to Nancy for her dedication to bringing recovery to women. We are all very blessed to have Nancy and CRA here in town.

Nancy is a modern day Saint, as many of those nominated are.
She has commited herself to helping others regain their lives one step at a time. First, she brings Hope to women who often feel hopeless. She brings Light to the reality of Recovery and its many gifts. Nancy is a Gift, with a spirit and zest for life that are wonderfully infectious. Second, she has created a living environment at Come Rest Awhile that allows women a place to heal and grow.
Through her dedication many lives have been touched, and numerous families are reunited in a common bond of respect and recovery. Nancy helps create miracles everyday...in her own way, she is living proof that one person can make a huge difference in the lives of many. I am truely grateful and blessed that she has been a part of my life... A very important part.

I came to CRA in March of 2007. It was my home for nearly two years. I chose to return to a rehab center in Oregon in part because I knew that Come Rest Awhile would provide a safe haven for me after rehab. I had tried many times to remain sober in my hometown in Colorado, only to relapse after short periods of sobriety. Come Rest Awhile gave me the opportunity to put (and keep) my recovery first. I was able to focus on my recovery 24/7 in a very supportive environment with other women in early recovery. I know in my heart that had I returned to Colorado after rehab, my chances of staying in recovery were minimal. I am so very grateful for Nancy's wisdom and early recognition of the need for women's sober living homes. I know that my life would have taken a very different path without Nancy and my experience at Come Rest Awhile. Thank you, Nancy, for all that you do, but mostly, thank you for loving me until I learned to love myself. Love to you.

Nancy has been an inspiration to me because she shows that dedication, hard work, and love truly can make a positive change in the lives of those in need as well as in the world overall. I have witnessed first hand the respect, admiration, and love shown by the many women who have participated in the "Come Rest A While" program. Her work has drawn the attention and support of key members of the community, which serves to strengthen the program and allow it to continue to provide the valuable service of providing a transition space for women in recovery. Her work has helped to transform the lives of a great many women in positive, healing ways. "Angel" is a most appropriate term for this remarkable woman.

Nancy has been an inspiration to me for many years for the tireless and selfless way she has dedicated her life to helping women who have an addiction to alcohol make their way back to a productive and joyful life. She is an angel to many!

I met Nancy two years ago at an 6am AA meeting. I didn't know her but was drawn to her presence. I told her about my friend whom was in a bad relapse and she gladly offered to come over to visit with her. She ended up taking that woman to the hospital and set her up in a rehab on the coast. Today that same woman has two years of sobriety and was in need of a place to live; Nancy opened her heart and her home up to her. Last month I suffered a horrible relapse and had no place to live, I called Nancy and now I am living in the house she runs, "Come Rest Awhile". This house and the woman in it are saving my life, literally. I see Nancy almost everyday and it is always a pleasure to see her and visit with her. She is one of the most altruistic ladies I have ever met. She has devoted her life to helping others recover from this hideous disease (that I too carry) of alcoholism/drug addiction and she truly gets joy from seeing woman turn there lives around. I consider Nancy to be an angle and a Saint for her continued love and devotion to all of those who are in her life; along with those woman in the future that Nancy will soon bless and watch after.

I lived at Come Rest Awhile for almost two years at the beginning of my recovery, and it was the best decision I ever made. Come Rest Awhile, and more importantly Nancy's commitment to every newly sober woman she comes into contact with, has made a significant impact on my life and the lives of many other women. Nancy is a woman who has dedicated her life to the true meaning of recovery by selflessly sharing her life with others, and she cannot help but inspire. She is deserving of any and all recognition that may come her way. Thanks, Nancy!

Nancy is a special friend of mine. I run a treatment center in Astoria, Oregon and we send some of our ladies to Come Rest Awhile when they complete inpatient treatment. I can call Nancy 24/7 and she always has the same wonderful demeanor. She is doing God's work and never complains. She will get up in the middle of the night and help a lady if she needs it. I have seen this over and over and I am overwhelmed with gratitude and love to know her. Nancy "walks the walk" in recovery. It is with great honor that I vote for Nancy to receive this award. Thanks for being part of my life, Nancy!!!

Nancy is a friend/ sister/ mom, what ever you need her to be on this wonderful journey called Recovery. I moved to Oregon in 2003 from Wisconsin when I retired. I have known Nancy by reputation and as a personal friend for several of those years. I stand in awe and all that she has accomplished. She has shared her story at The First Friday Speaker meeting in Newport,OR. I am honored to call her friend and send my vote for her joyfully.

I am truly honored to know Nancy. She is an angel to so many. The daily sacrifices she makes to help those in need is astounding. Nancy staying up all night to assist a woman who is barely hanging on, then returning to Come Rest Awhile to support the residents, is just what she does. She never seeks or expects anything in return for her selflessness. The time has come for Nancy to recieve the recognition she deserves.
I believe I am a sober woman today because Nancy took the time to carry me, when I could not carry myself. I wholeheartedly cast my vote for you Nancy. Saying "thank you" over and over will never be enough.

I have seen the results of Nancy's patient labor over the years. To those women who badly need not only a place to rest, but also a guide who can lead them to a new life by example, Nancy is indeed an angel. I am honored to be a strong supporter of this appropriate recognition of Nancy.

Before I met Nancy, I did not know what I was going to do or where I was going to go. People in my life were starting to give up on me. Because of Nancy and her sober living home, I was able to live in a safe and comfortable environment. I remember the day that I was moving in, Nancy said to me "You will never have to do anything alone again". I learned from this that it was ok to ask for help, and Nancy was there when I needed help. Nancy is a living angel. She deserves to be recognized for her selfless acts.

Nancy is truly a Guradian Angel who has touched the lives of everyone around here, one day at a time. I can't remember a day that she didn't smile, especially whenever she met a newcomer. Nancy is selfless and passionate about the program. She gives me Faith that it works, as long as I keep "doing the dishes".
