The Battered Women’s Shelter of Bexar County became a model for the nation by introducing innovative and wide-ranging programs.

The mission of Family Violence Prevention Services Inc. is to break the cycle of violence and to strengthen families, by providing the necessary tools for self-sufficiency through the delivery of emergency shelter, transitional housing, education, effective parenting education, and early intervention with children and youth.

Laura is the Outreach and Transitional Services Director for Family Violence Prevention Services.

Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc. (FVPS) has been helping victims of domestic violence in San Antonio since 1977. FVPS began as an emergency shelter for women and children in 1977, and we now offer a complete array of shelter, transitional housing, counseling, children’s, and legal services to help individuals and families recover from the pain and long-term effects of domestic violence.

Outreach Program
FVPS offers education throughout San Antonio promoting awareness of domestic violence and educating victims about their rights and options.  In keeping with FVPS’s goal of promoting long-term independence, the FVPS Transitional Housing Program includes three tiers which gradually move individuals and families toward complete self-sufficiency.

    • Goals initially set while in the Battered Women and Children’s Shelter are furthered during the first tier of the Transitional Housing Program.
    • Emphasis shifts from the therapeutic to the applied, as women and children use skills and resources in their daily lives.
    • Clients maintain at least part-time employment and/or are continuing their education.
    • Both adults and children continue to receive counseling and case management services while participating in the Transitional Housing Program, and with support of FVPS staff, establish a pattern of stability and success in setting and achieving educational, employment-related, and financial goals.
    • Tier three of the Transitional Housing Program offers rental assistance, scholarships, and the support of all FVPS Programs to ensure attainment of dignity, lasting independence, and freedom from abuse.

Laura is the Outreach and Transitional Services Director for Family Violence Prevention Services. She was hired by the Agency as a residential case manager in 1989 and has spent the past twenty years working with battered women. In addition to running the Transitional Housing Program and providing case management for her clients. I completely agree with Linda and Lula. Laura stresses herself out worrying about all of the clients she's ever worked with. Lula said it, "Above and Beyond!" She so deserves this!

I know that Laura goes out of her way even on her off days and hours to help the families that she works with. She has picked up clothing and items on her time off that I have donated. I know that she works all hours of the day to do what ever is needed. She is very caring and my family and I admire her very much. It takes a very special person to do the the job she is doing and to show so much love for people she doesn't even know.
