Sisters Of The Road exists to build authentic relationships and alleviate the hunger of isolation in an atmosphere of nonviolence and gentle personalism that nurtures the whole individual, while seeking systemic solutions that reach the roots of homelessness and poverty to end them forever.

Monica is the Executive Director of a 30 year-old non-profit located in Portland, Oregon that provides both hot, nutritious meals for $1.25 (or in exchange for 15 minutes of barter work) but also works on the root causes of homelessness and poverty through community organizing and building a cross-class movement for economic human rights.

Sisters uses the philosophies on nonviolence and gentle-personalism as its guiding  philosophies for all it does. Monica is from both rural (Newport) and urban (Portland) Oregon and is passionate about making these places safe and supportive for all people.

Monica is truly one of the kindest people I know. She is someone that I look up to for inspiration.

Monica has a true personal dedication to Sisters' philosophies of nonviolence and gentle personalism, and she models them every day. She works an amazing amount, but always has time for a conversation with a customer, volunteer or staff member.

When she talks - she creates community. When she hugs you - she creates a family. And when she takes the world of impossible on she gets results that take a healthy soul and hearty spirit. How did Portland ever get so lucky?

Monica is one of the most inspiring people I know. She inspires me because she is so down-to-earth and she walks her talk and lives her life with utmost integrity. She has transformed Sisters also by the varied ways she has created fun and community-building events in honor/support of sisters...the hoedown, the guitar raffle, operation cornbread, and now....a kissing booth!! :)

sorry, some people, thank god, have a mind of their own, and know exactly when people are fishing for votes, and being brainwashed sorry for the cliche...i have spoken my mind, in the past, regarding the illegal, unethical, physical, spiritual, and social abuse to me and my family from certain people of the sisters of the road cafe, behind the guise of gentle personalism, etc, i experienced deceit, subtle, and insidious violence, by staff members and their fony fiends, and downright, ignorance, arrogance, and denial of these issues to my face, i dont think much of Genny Nelson and i never will...oh, and while i have expressed my feelings (freedom of speech) in the past, i have been met with further subtle violence and hypocrasy from the staff,,heh. yeah, just because i expressed the TRUTH, they in turn, twisted it around, reported my IP address as being in "violation" or abusive, and threatening...yeah, go right ahead, all your actions , just validated what i had said, and ever expereinced and or thot,,, i was right all along...sure, you might be angels to some people, and everyone obviously thinks you are saints, but some of us know better, and justice may not be served now, or in the near future, etc, but your skinking Karma, will show itself, sooner or later, heh, some of us, know how to think for ourselves, and refuse to "worship" you (lol) like everyone else does...cuz your basically pathetic and amusing...so go ahead, fuck with THIS IP address ; it belongs to and elderly couple in wheelchairs, who mind their own business, with their children, who lived in portland at one time, suffered unspeakable abuse at your hand...twist this TRUTH i have spoken here, around, see where it gets you THIS time, maybe someday you will actually practice what you preach...maybe someday, somewhere, the BS you write and speak about, this gentle personalism, will finally be meant for EVERYONE not just SOME ...

Monica is a unique combination of hard-nosed businesswoman, creative problem-solver, and big-hearted social worker, which has made her a great Executive Director of one of the most venerable and respected nonprofits in Oregon (and the US). She has led Sisters Of The Road to both fiscal abundance and visionary leadership around poverty issues in Portland. She knows how to both share power and wield it effectively; it's not many people you can say that about.

I am doing a project presentation for my sociology class on a grass roots organization. I found a website that had your organization on it and decided to look into it. I think that this cafe has probally contributed to the changes of many lives and I would like to say, GOOD JOB! Not everyone has the desire or compashion to help those that have a hard time helping themselves.

I met Monica today and was so moved by her passion to give voice to those who are ignored because of being homeless or impoverished. She is passionate about finding a solution to end hunger and discrimination.
I believe she has earned this award.
