Ms. Amy Henderson is the Founder of The Geezer Gallery, a non-profit organization that seeks to challenge ageist thinking and stereotypes by providing opportunities for older adults to participate in the creative arts for both financial profit and personal edification.
Ms. Henderson’s desire to create a platform supporting artistic endeavors for older adults led her to study the psycho-social aspects of aging at Marylhurst University, culminating in a Master of Arts degree in 2009. Due to Ms. Henderson’s passionate investment of time and energy, enthusiasm for The Geezer Gallery is growing and the goal of opening a brick-and-mortar art gallery featuring the fine art of elder artists is close to being realized. Portland Art Spark Spotlights The Geezer Gallery And Elders In Action
January 23, Portland Contemporary Art Examiner Rachael Lorenz

Portland Art Spark took a step beyond simply networking with others involved in the arts. Thursday night The Art Bar spotlight was on The Geezer Gallery founder and president Amy Henderson, and development director Brenda Morgan from Elders In Action.
Painters Madeline Meza Janovec and Janet Louvau Holt, contributing members of The Geezer Gallery, encouraged attendees to pick up a paintbrush and make art. “Just do it,” Louvau Holt announced to those passing by, indicating the paintbrushes, paint and paper on the table beside her, all the while adding paint to her own canvas. “Anyone can paint.” more>>

Artist champions importance of art at any age.

Janet Louvau Holt will be exhibiting her artwork to benefit The Geezer Gallery’s art therapy and instructional programs for seniors.
“You don’t have to give up just because you have a different number after your name,” says Janet Louvau Holt, one of the many accomplished senior artists on The Geezer Gallery roster for shows in the near future.
The Geezer Gallery envisions a future where each and every senior can create and experience joy through the arts, a future where becoming an elder is a process of positive change and new possibilities.
Janet’s words encourage senior citizens of the greater Portland area who will be given the opportunity to experience this exciting new way of growing old through art.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” she adds, knowing that part of the proceeds from the sale of her paintings will go to fund The Geezer Gallery’s art therapy and instructional programs.

Amy 's commitment to changing agist thinking is surpassed only by her passion for making life better for the individual elders she encounters in her life. She and her team are unwaveringly following her business plans to develop an art gallery that will feature elder artists, and provide programs of art and art therapy to the community. Creative activity contributes to cultural innovation, personal well-being and so much more. Amy Henderson is working day and night to make life better for elders. As Elders in Action's partner in Grand Works Northwest Art Festival coming in May 2010, her firey spirit and connection to elders and elder artists is contributing hugely to make this fundraising event a success. She's got our suppport 100%!

Ms Henderson is a remarkable woman. Her ability to communicate her ideas, her concern for the elderly, and the ability to balance her private life with her business life makes her the perfect person to be able to not only be successful in this endeavor, but create an environment where seniors will thrive. It is rare in our society to find someone who has a vision for senior citizens. It is rarer to find someone who is willing to give so much of her life to living her beliefs. In many cultures the elderly are revered. In our culture in the last 50 to 100 years the trend of neglecting our elders has led to a disconnect from them. This has led to alienation with many giving up on life. There are those seniors who have no family left or are in the position of not knowing what family have because of the generations lost between. A great grandmother may not know her great grand children because of the loss of her family between them. All the children know is that they have some old lady or man some where that they are related to. These fountains of knowledge and wisdom sit in nursing homes waiting for the end. Amy has found a way to give life back to the aging. With life comes revitalization of the person. They have purpose again and though they may not have a biological family they gain new friends who become like family. There is a common thread established through art. They are not longer inactive, lonely, or unproductive. We all want to leave a legacy. Not through The Geezer Gallery their creativity through art will be remembered by those who come to visit the gallery long after they has passed on. Ms Henderson is deserving of this award not because of who she is, but for the ground breaking work she is doing allowing our elders some dignity and connection for the rest of their lives.

I could not think of a more qualified alumna of Marylhurst University who exemplifies our mission so beautifully: "Marylhurst emphasizes the uniqueness and dignity of each person"... and "seeks to aid students in advancing their goals for responsible participation in a rapidly changing world by pursuing, and encouraging its students to pursue, the ideals of competence, leadership and service." Amy is using her many talents, passion and vision to make the world a better place through the honoring of our elders. Amy is a force to be reckoned with! She is so deserving of this recognition. Congratulations Amy!

I met Amy when she had a display of the Geezer Gallery at our multicultural Colored Pencils event. I sat with her and enjoyed hearing and understanding the vision and goal of The Geezer Gallery. I work in healthcare and I think this gallery not only provides a platform for our senior citizens to honor their history and their talent, but also a place where the spirit continues to thrive. I don't belive this country honors our seniors but with this kind of work, we begin to change the way we view our seniors, shaping our culture into a more reverent and peaceful society. I wish all the best for Amy and all of her hard work and dedication.

Without a doubt Amy Henderson is our Portland Angel. She has a depth of awareness of the needs of older adults. Her mission is to change the paradigm of ageism, from discrimination and prejudice against our elders to respect and open-mindedness. Amy spear heading the Geezer Gallery is the vehicle to create the momentum of change. Amy knows The Geezer Gallery is the impetus to develop and implement programs of art and art therapy throughout the senior community. Her extraordinary insights into the senior artist’s creative process and need to express it, inspires seniors to believe in themselves and to celebrate the never ending need to create. We residents of the Willamette View Retirement Community have experienced firsthand Amy’s has a skill of bringing together older adults and working to understand aging and the creative process through discussions, exhibits and friendships. Compassion and empathy reflects in Amy’s unending drive to reach her mission.

Offering creative outlets for seniors to share their talents, helps to counter-act the unhealthy emphasis on eternal youth in our society. it's a problem which effects us all, and is worth our support. Amy deserves our applause!

Amy has boundless energy and is a real inspiration. She's taken a social concern (helping people as they age) and transformed it into something fun and exciting. Geezer Gallery, her brainchild, isn't a preachy organization that discusses how art is good for people as they age. It *shows* our community by example, showcasing people who are art professionals and those who have talent waiting to blossom. Through her enthusiasm, vision and energy, she and her merry band of Geezers suck people in and transforms them into converts. For example, I first heard about the Gallery through one of my programs. Rachel and she convinced me Portland had to have it and that I had to help. Congratulations, Amy! Well done.

Currently, our society celebrates those who are the most selfish, self consumed and negative among us. The selfless, the giving, the positive, the dreamers of dreams for a better day for everyone are rarely recognized. Yet they are the ones who truly run the engine of civilization for the good. And future generations may say we are like this now because they blazed the trail then. Amy Henderson is one such dreamer (and here in Oregon we love dreamers) for the good, for the possible, for the ennobling and higher callings of our culture. She is one such pioneer.

I recently met Amy and was amazed by the breadth of her vision, passion, and commitment to the Geezer Gallery's goals to empower senior citizens to realize the gifts that lie within them and to give them the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the community around them. As an older person myself, I understand how easily one can feel out of place in what often seems like a youth-driven culture. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Amy in such a remarkable and compassionate enterprise. Her commitment, hard work, education, business and organizational skills and, most of all, her passion, make her an individual more than worthy of this award. She has my enthusiastic vote.
