Donelle Manton - Tres Islas Orphanage Fund ~ Umpqua River, Oregon
Tres Islas Orphanage Fund, founded by Donelle Manton, a photojournalist originally from Wyoming, is now in its 23rd year and currently serves 123 children in
five orphanages in Mazatlan, Mexico. With 100% of all donations, over $332,500 to date, going towards the betterment of the children.
Contribute to Donelle’s voting process by sharing a review after the article below.

The Tres Islas Orphanage Fund was founded on the premise that 100 percent of all money donated to the Fund would help children in orphanages in Old Mexico - first to buy nourishing food for the children each week, second, educational needs, including, school supplies, shoes, uniforms, clothes and making upgrades to their homes, the orphanages and medical needs.
The Tres Islas Orphanage Fund began in the mid-1980s as a one-person effort to help children in Mazatlan, Mexico’s orphanages when one of the founders of the Fund, who is a newspaper reporter by trade, was sent to Mazatlan with a bag-full of film and an assignment to "photograph the children of Mexico."
Little did the reporter know at the time how that one assignment would forever change her life. She photographed children everywhere: on the beach, in the plazas, in the church, on the streets. Then one day she sought out an orphanage after learning that there are numerous orphanages located throughout Mexico. Of course, the children in the orphanage had to be represented in her photographs as well. And on that day, the Tres Islas Orphanage Fund began.
The name of the orphanage she went to is Orfanatorio Mazatlan. Located in downtown Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico at 227 Zaragoza, Orfanatorio Mazatlan is the oldest orphanage in Mazatlan. It was founded in 1902 when an epidemic of the bubonic plague left many children without parents. Primarily, it is a girls' orphanage although little boys also stay there when they have sisters who are living there - thus maintaining a sense of family.
In return for each and every donation, each fall (after school purchases) every donor would receive a copy of each store receipt - signed by the director of the orphanage or the principal care giver who is at the orphanage at the time of delivery - to verify their donations were spent exactly as they wanted to help the needy children in orphanages.
In addition, the name, address and telephone number of the orphanage would be provided to each donor as well as a list of the children in each orphanage and donors would always be welcome to visit the orphanage and participate in the children's lives.

Donelle is employed at the University of Oregon (UO) as a Program Assistant in the Annual Giving Program, which raises funds for academics. She manages the many administrative aspects of their very busy office, ensuring that donor records are up to date and that their requests are always acknowledged in a timely fashion. She also puts her extensive journalism background to use writing feature stories for various campus publications. Sharing student success stories is one of her favorite ways to illustrate the power of annual gifts to the university.
Donelle’s true passion is caring for the children in Mexico’s orphanages. She feels it's a blessing and an opportunity from God to serve these children. She feeds this passion for the children by dedicating her after-work hours, weekends and vacations managing the Tres Islas Orphanage Fund (www.orphanagefunds.org) and its endeavors, hand-in-hand with her loving husband.
Her foundation is now in its 23rd year and currently serves 123 children in five orphanages in Mazatlan, Mexico. With 100% of all donations, over $332,500 to date, going towards the betterment of the children, her efforts have made a significant and positive difference in the lives of hundreds of children. Donelle’s love for the people of Mexico reaches beyond the children in the orphanages. She also supports UO programs that specialize in Mexico.

Donelle resides on a small farm along the banks of the Umpqua River in Oregon with her husband Tom, the organization’s vice president and behind the scenes ‘hands-on’ talent.

Sometimes we are fortunate to meet an angel on earth. Donelle is one.

We had the honor of meeting Donelle in person for the first time this year at the Spring Mission Week in Mazatlan. We've been supporters of Tres Islas for a few years, but to actually meet this wonderful, humble person was wonderful. God bless you, Donelle, for all you do.

Donelle is relentless in her work at the orphanages. Knowing Donelle has changed my life. I believe she has touched everyones life she has been in contact with. It is an honor to know her and call her my friend. She is one of the few people who actually leave a place better than she found it. PS. And her husband is not a bad dancer either! (Country Casa)

I was referred to Donelle in 2004. I spoke at a Hands Across the Borders' meeting at which I was asking for assistance of any kind for Father Tovar's Home for Boys - Hogar San Pablo (HSP). HSP was in dire need of everything & Father Tovar was ailing from acute diabetes & heart trouble. Bob & Janet Schmitt, facilitators for the Tres Islas Orphanage Fund (TIOF), were at that meeting & afterward they told me that they knew someone who might be able to help. We visited HSP together & they contacted Donelle & Tom. Very soon thereafter, HSP was added to the TIOF weekly food program. Since then TIOF's support of HSP has been unwavering, including many work projects, purchases of washing machines, refrigerators, school uniforms, shoes, supplies too numerous to list & scholarships for several of the boys. Donelle and TIOF truly saved the day. Donelle began helping 1 orphanage and as funds increased she added another & another & another until now TIOF helps five Mazatlan orphanages/childrens' homes. This is due to one woman's determination to help the children she met 23 years ago. In addition, she works full time and she & her husband have an organic farm. When does she ever sleep?

A plesant angel with a great big heart. Thank you for all that you do with so little. What a very kind way to express your love towards all the children who have so little. What an honor to have worked with you.

No one could possibly deserve this award more. Donnelle is not only an angel, she's a miracle-wrorker, and her dedication to the children of Mexico is absolute.

What a wonderful-incredible woman. Her passion for these children should inspire everyone who wants to serve God in a profound manner. She truly is a gift to those children.

Upon first meeting Donelle it was hard to believe she was a REAL angel. After spending a week with her and witnessing her endless concern and love for the children she serves, I now believe. She deserves this award and more.

Donnelle is a selfless woman who has been lead to serve God through helping children. There is no greater way to show our love for God than by serving the least among us.

There are many words that come to mind when I think of Donelle, but the main one is 'self-less'. Donelle is truly an angel who makes sure that the needy children of Mazatlan, Mexico are fed and clothed, and through the Tres Islas Fund, allows donors to participate in a real 'hands-on' way through annual Spring Work Weeks. She is not only energetic and enthusiastic about this cause, but it is obvious that she has a real heart for the children.. Hundreds of lives have been changed for the better because of the work of Donelle, Tom and the Tres Islas Fund.

It is evident to me Donelle deserves an Angel award as her dedication, concern, love, enthusiasm and caring is for the the children of Mazatlan, Mexico. I am thankful I had the pleasure and opportunity to serve at the Spring work week at the Orphanages and saw first hand all the amazing work which has been done for the children and will continue to be done under the guidance and direction of Donelle and Tom.

Donelle and I have been friends over the phone working on projects for the Tres Islas Orphanage fund. Her joy and enthusiasm always leaves me refreshed and motivated. She is the definition of the word "inspiration".

Donelle is an inspiration to anyone who is around her. Her dedication to the well being of Mazatlan's orphan children is unwavering. She very definately should receive this award.

I have beeing part of the Board of Directors of Orfanatorio Mazatlan for seven years. In that moment the only and loyal support was Donelle and Tom, and Tres Islas donnors. The orphanage and the children were having a hard time getting donations. At the moment we met we had a wonderful understanding, she was so sensible and loving to the childrens needs and wanted to give them all the chances and oportunities they deserved. She had beeing working very hard to get the funds to cover all the basic needs, not only for Orfanatorio Mazatlan, for the other 3 childrens homes Tres Islas was suporting. Always giving thank you to the Loard, for having the chance to do what she was doing. A year ago we started with a new home for teen agers, since the beginning she said yes, we will work for them too. Now there are 5 childrens home Tres Islas donnors and Donelle-Tom take care. God bless her, we need many more people like her to have a better world

WE met Donelle in Mazatlan in 1996. We were staying in the same RV Park at the time. Donelle and my wife became close friends and constant companions. They spent many hours and days working for the "kids" Donelle was always trying to get things done for them. New shoes, Barbeque's, outings at the beach. Getting stand in parents for Quintana's (can't spell in Spanish) I think those kids are in her mind and heart at all times. This reward would be a small token of the rewards she has earned.

It is amazing where Donelle's path in life has taken her. If more people in the world could do what she has done it would be a better place to live. She deserves recognition for her loving work as she is a humble soul.

My first conversation with Donelle in 2006 changed my life for ever. She graciously offered to name her Christmas Fund after my son Christopher who died unexpectedly on Christmas Day in 2005. I am still amazed that she thought of a way to keep Chris' memory alive while helping the beautiful and deserving children of Mazatlan. She has changed my life and the lives of our family and friends. Her love for all of God's children has been inspiriational and her total dedication to Tres Islas and concern for those in need is truly remakable. I feel God has blest me with my dear friend Donelle.

Donelle is such an inspiration and motivation for our family in serving and founding the Tres Islas Orphanage Fund. We are so grateful to have found her and TIOF so that we can also have the opportunity to help her feed, nourish and care for these beautiful children in Mexico. What a blessing she is in their lives and also in our family. She truly deserves to be honored and recognized for all her efforts.

I have been part of the Board of Directors at Orphanatorio de Mazatlan for the past 7 years as the Treasurer. I want to thank Donelle and Tome for being our best support. Without their assistant and all of the donors of Tres Islas Orphanage Fund we would not have been able to support the kids as we had. Donelle and Tom interest in helping every particular kid with food, education, health and dress is something that no one else does. They have been great supporters for more than 20 years and we and the children are very fortunate to have them helping the Orphanage. God Bless them always.

First there was a spark- Donelle’s first visit to Orfanatorio Mazatlan over 20 years ago and her personal efforts to help the children. Then there was a fire- Donelle’s creation of the Tres Islas Orphange Fund in order to encourage a collective effort to help the children in Mazatlan. The spark and subsequent fire have warmed the hearts and souls of many. As a relatively new Tres Islas Orphanage donor, I visited Mazatlan for the first time in July, last year. I was so impressed during my visit, I planned a twenty-three day visit in December so I could volunteer in all the homes and orphanages that the fund supports. Now, there is no where on Earth I would rather spend my time. I made the commitment to go every year in order to help improve the lives of the children. My two trips enabled me to witness first-hand how Donelle’s innovation and courage created an impressive network of support for the orphanages and children’s homes. Donelle’s efforts have given the gift of childhood to so many children. The experience truly never leaves your heart. Donelle Manton exemplifies the best sustained and selfless voluntary service. She has improved the lives of so many children and made a difference in the community of Mazatlan. Emphasizing achievement for the children, she brings a sense of pride and accomplishment to each and every one of their lives. She carries the respect of her peers and is an inspiration to all. When there seemed to be nowhere to turn, Donelle’s passion provided a guiding light for the orphanages and children’s homes in Mazatlan. I am honored to support her nomination for the Volunteer Leadership Angel Award.

I know "Daniela" (Donelle in Spanish) since 23 years a go; She use to come for vacations in that time, but now I have work for the orphanages many times regarding plumbing, cooking, roofing, in the floor, and it amazing me all the support and the will of help, specially the youg souls in the Orphanages. I remember Daniela's Faudation support the job in the roof of "Ciudad de los Niños" ; that was a big and hard goal to acomplish..... When we finish to see and hear Madre Velia thank the Lord for sending an Angel to help in this job. I KNEW DANIELA WAS A EMISARY IN EARTH OBEYING GOD'S WILL.

Donelle and I have been friends since we were 11 sharing the experience of X-mas angels for our church we met at. Yes Donelle is the Angel these children prayed for. I have worked with Tres Islas Orphanage since Donelle and my 50 birthday! Her love and passion for these children cannot be measured by anything but their love. A true angel! Forever! Laura M

I visited Tres Islas orphanage in Mazatlan this winter, it is truly wonderful what all the volunteers there have accomplished. Very inspiring how a vision shared by Father Tovar and all his helpers has come to reality, and how it has given the boys what they need to succeed in life...

Donelle and Tom Manton are director and co-director of the Tres Islas Orphanage Fund, a project begun by Donelle that provides food, school uniforms, books, and repairs to five orphanages in Mazatlán, Mexico. I first read about this project in an article in my local newspaper in which two women donors said the fund has no administrative fees because the directors work on a fully volunteer basis and 100% of donations go to the children in the orphanages. I found this hard to believe, so I checked the program’s web site and financial reports. Amazingly, it was true! The two women in the article also said that donors are welcome to participate in a week-long volunteer effort in April of each year to do physical labor to improve each of the five orphanages. My husband and I joined this effort this April. We saw first-hand the needs of the orphanages and the fine results of our donated funds. The preparations made in advance by Donelle and Tom were most impressive, and volunteer work crews were able to accomplish amazing changes in the lives of the children. I most heartily recommend Donelle for the Volunteer Leadership Angel Award.

I learned of Donelle Manton and her Tres Islas Fund that aids the orphans of Mazatlán, Mexico over a year ago. My wife and I had the opportunity of working in the orphanages and children's homes in Mazatlán this month with Donelle and her husband and over 20 other volunteers from Canada and the USA. I saw firsthand the good works that Donelle and her organization do for the children. Proverbs tells us, "happy are those who are kind to the poor." Not only is Donelle committed to and happy with the work that she has done with the children for the past 20+ years, but the children and their caretakers shine with happiness. I feel privileged to know Donelle, and it is an honor to cast my vote for her.
Friday, April 30, 2010 8:28 PM
I agree that Donelle really deserves this award, as I just spent my 20th year visiting the children of Ciudad los nin~os as she helped me with my connections with Gaudelia shopping spree, the children are so happy and they are so well taken care of. To have seen most of these children grown up from baby on,and knowing the Donelle has had major part of the health and schooling of these wonderful children. the Lives of these wonderful children would not be all smiles without her care . Hats off to Donelle and thank you for all the phone calls to mazatlan to make sure all went well this past year, and I made all my connections when I was in mexico by myself, you are so caring, you are truely and angel. If anyone deserves this award, it is for you Donelle, May you be blessed always for your kind heart and for the childrens lives. from your freind in Minnesota.

I am honored to call this kind soul a friend. It's never about her, always about the children. Her days and weeks of service seem to invigorate her rather than tire her out. She always has a smile on her face and is always able to add one more worthy cause to her list. God bless her for inspiring so many of us to try to keep up with her in vain. Her leadership on behalf of the children in Mazatlan and the many lives she has touched will continue to have an influence long after she is gone.

Donelle is a remarkable woman! I've known her for 25 years. I met her when she brought a gift to my home for my husband who had done ear surgery on her earlier that month. At the time I was recovering from breast cancer and was very depressed and lethargic. Donelle was extremely empathetic and I felt so comfortable with her, I shared my woes, even though she was a complete stranger at the time. We became very good friends over the years and she stayed with our children off & on when we all lived near each other. Both my husband and I have worked with Tres Islas and find it to be an exceptionally run organization, due to Donelle's leadership. She is truly an angel to those children in Mazatlan!

Even in Canada we know wnat a blessing Donelle has been to the orphans in Mazatlan. She well deserves recognition & I had also entered her on CNN/Heroes last year.

Donnelle truly tiplifies an angel, a mesenger from God, the protector of the orphans in Mazatlan and she is always guiding others to assist her in that role. I hope to join one of the working trips to be guided by her inspiration to improve the conditions the children are living in and assist with thier educations so they may aspire to a hire calling than they may have realize without Donnelle's loving assistants. I too cast my vote for Donnelle Manton, the most deserving recipient I know.

I would be honored to submit my vote for Donelle for this award. I have had the privelage of seeing first hand the works that she started through the Grace of Our Lord in Mazatlan. I Have known Donelle since 1997, everything she said she wanted to do to help the children she did, even if was from her own purse. I can say that I have read all the responses so far and everyone is right and that is hard to top. Donelle has touched so many hearts, the children, the adult helpers/donators, and the Mexican community. She deserves this award as do many of the others that are mentioned. Even if she does not win this award, she will keep marching forward, I know this and I have seen this in her. Thanks to her, the miles of smiles that she put on those children and helpers are enough to know that you have been appreciated. Thanks Donelle and Tom and good luck. Love ya Michael J.
